When the sun had completely dropped off the edge of the Pacific Ocean, the red glow lingered on the horizon and left enough light to see the blue of the calm sea. Trees on the bluff framed the scene with their dark silhouettes. An empty bench awaits the first light to welcome the a visitor with a book or electronic screen to breathe in the morning's salt air. This scene, which could be any of a number of places along Highway 1, just happens to be right in the heart of Elk, California -- an unincorporated town with a population of around 200 in Mendocino, County. The map depicts this spot on the Pacific Coast west and a bit north of San Francisco.
