Description
Keelers Korner is closing in on a century of existence. Constructed as a full-service station in 1927, it opened for business to coincide with the completion of Highway 99 that connected Seattle and Everett. With the address of 16401 Highway 99 in Lynnwood, Washington, it has transitioned from a popular rural landmark to the only Lynnwood building on the National Historic Landmark registry. It gained that status in 1982. Much of the vintage gas station trappings are from the collection of property owner Jerry Chinn and not artifacts of the original business. The initial gas station actually closed for business in 1960.
US Highway 99 runs parallel to Interstate 5, is often used as an alternative to that busy north-south freeway, and is lined with numerous businesses and cross intersections with traffic lights. At most times, non-stop traffic fills all six lanes two lanes each direction, a shared left turn lane and right turn exit lanes. In order to get unobstructed views of this vintage service station, I position myself across US Highway 99 early on a Sunday morning.
