Mt. Rainier in the middle of July. This noon-time image shows the action of high winds near the summit of the mountain and the beginning of the formation of lenticular clouds. While the camera loves this scene, the serious climbers notice with dread as it may well spell the end of their dreams to summit. In fact, on this date, within 90 minutes of this image being shot, the top three or four thousand feet were completely obstructed from view from the clouds (fog) formed by the high winds aloft. By dinner time, rain arrived at Paradise and everything was a soupy fog by morning. One feels the sense of loss for the climbers that had to retreat from their ascent perhaps regretting all their planning, travel, special arrangements and expenses that have now gone unsatisfied.
