Description
Photographed early one Sunday morning, this is the mostly unoccupied lobby of Paradise Inn at Mt. Rainier National Park. Built in 1916, it sits at the 5,400' level at the base of Mt. Rainier. It proved to be such a popular destination, that an annex, built in 1920, added an additional 100 rooms. Constructed of weathered, exposed cedar logs, Paradise Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places. The inn fills with guests from mid-June to early September. Reservations are a must. In order to withstand a major earthquake, the inn was closed for two years from 2006-08 to undergo needed retrofitting. Upon re-opening, new lamp shades were unveiled. Replicas of the original 1917 shades, all 84 of them, were the commissioned, hand-painted work of Dale Thompson.
